Be wary of listening too carefully to what you are told by e-bike sales people and to what you read on the web.  Many make claims that you will achieve 70km to 100km on a 10,8Ah battery.  Would that this were true!

The distance you will achieve will depend on a number of factors, including, inter alia:
  • effort exerted - the more you pedal and the harder you pedal, the longer your battery will last
  • terrain - the more uphills you encounter, the less your battery will last
  • weight - the more you weigh, the less your battery will last
  • battery capacity - the greater the capacity of your battery, the longer it will last (a 10,6Ah battery will last longer than an 8,8Ah battery)

Illustration - Rider A weighs 105 Kg and rider B weights 58 Kg.
  • Ride 1 (approx 34 km) - President hotel in Sea Point up Suikerbossie to Hout Bay to Contantia Neck (long and steep), then on to Kirstenbosch and Montebello in Newlands.  Rider A's battery is flat at the end of the ride, but rider B's battery has 20% capacity remaining.
  • Ride 2 (approx 56 km) - Montebello in Newlands to Muizenburg via Tokai (quite a bit of uphill), Steenberg wine Estate, Silvermine and then back along main Road.  Again rider A's battery is flat at the end of the ride, and again rider B's battery has 20% capacity remaining.
